What is Morpheus8?

Morpheus8 is microneedling with radiofrequency. Fine insulated needles pass through the surface of the skin and release radiofrequency energy at a set depth in the dermis, creating controlled thermal injury where collagen is produced while largely sparing the epidermis above it. Microneedling without radiofrequency is a different treatment with different strengths — we cover it on our plain microneedling page.

You choose your provider when you book. If you book a physician, the physician performs your treatment personally — which sounds obvious and is not: at most practices the physician owns the business and signs the protocols while someone else holds the handpiece. Our advanced practice nurse also performs Morpheus8. Whichever of them you select is the one who performs your treatment, and the section below on fat loss explains why that matters here.

Heat delivered into the dermis causes existing collagen to contract and prompts the body to lay down new collagen over the following months. On the face we treat between roughly 1 and 4 mm depending on how thick the tissue is in a given area, and rarely go beyond 3 mm except when addressing submental fullness under the chin. Morpheus8 for the body reaches considerably deeper — up to 7 mm — but that is a different applicator working on entirely different tissue.

Does Morpheus8 hurt?

Less than most people expect, and this is worth explaining properly because radiofrequency is a different sensation from needling alone.

We numb the treatment area beforehand with a compounded topical anesthetic made for us — lidocaine, tetracaine and prilocaine together, which is considerably stronger than anything available over the counter. It is applied here and monitored while it works, rather than handed to you to use at home. High-strength numbing creams are safe on a treatment area under supervision and genuinely are not when spread thickly over large areas by someone untrained.

With the area properly numb, most patients describe pressure and a deep warmth rather than pain. Bony areas — the forehead, the jawline, the area around the nose — are more sensitive than the cheeks, and deeper settings are felt more than shallow ones. It is uncomfortable in places rather than throughout, and a good number of patients are surprised by how manageable it is.

Tell us at any point if you are uncomfortable. Adjusting is straightforward, and there is nothing to be gained from enduring a setting you dislike.

Does Morpheus8 cause fat loss?

It can, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a denial, because it is the most common criticism of this treatment online and the concern is not baseless.

Radiofrequency delivered too deep, or at too much energy for the tissue in front of it, can affect the subcutaneous fat that gives a face its fullness. In the mid-face, where preserving that fat is precisely the goal, that is a poor outcome and it is not reliably reversible.

This is a technique problem rather than a device problem. Depth and energy have to be matched to the thickness of the tissue in each area, and that thickness varies across the face and from one patient to the next. Settings that are appropriate under the chin — where reducing submental fullness may be exactly what you want — are wrong over the cheek. Most of the bad outcomes circulating online trace back to providers working from a fixed protocol rather than from facial anatomy.

It is the reason we keep this treatment with our physicians and our advanced practice nurse, and the reason we treat conservatively at 1 to 3 mm across most of the face. If you are considering Morpheus8 anywhere — here or elsewhere — ask what depth and energy the provider intends to use on each area and why. A provider who cannot answer that question is the actual risk.

Is Morpheus8 safe for darker skin tones?

This is where radiofrequency microneedling has a real advantage over laser resurfacing. Lasers work by being absorbed by a chromophore — melanin or hemoglobin — which is precisely why they carry a higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation on deeper skin tones. Radiofrequency does not depend on chromophore absorption at all. It heats tissue by electrical resistance, so the amount of pigment in your skin does not change how the energy behaves.

Published reviews report lower rates of hyperpigmentation, redness and crusting with fractional radiofrequency than with fractional laser, and describe it as advantageous for Fitzpatrick types III through VI. Worth saying plainly: most published trial populations have been types II to V, so the evidence at the type VI end is thinner than in the middle of the range.

How much tightening can Morpheus8 actually do?

It treats mild to moderate laxity. The review literature is consistent that radiofrequency microneedling is designed for modest rejuvenation and improved skin quality rather than as a substitute for a surgical facelift, and that patient satisfaction is highest among those who wanted a subtle improvement rather than a dramatic one.

If your main concern is significant jowling or genuinely loose neck skin, we will tell you that at consultation rather than sell you a series that cannot deliver it. Where Morpheus8 performs well is skin quality — texture, pore size, early laxity, crepey skin and acne scarring.

What does Morpheus8 treat?

  • Skin laxity and early jowling
  • Neck and décolletage tightening
  • Under-eye crepiness and fine lines
  • Acne scars and post-inflammatory texture
  • Enlarged pores and surface texture
  • Stretch marks and body skin laxity (see Morpheus8 for Body)
  • Overall skin quality and glow

The largest published evidence base is for skin rejuvenation, followed by acne scars, then stretch marks and underarm sweating. For atrophic acne scars specifically, a 2025 systematic review found clinical improvement in all treated patients, with boxcar scars responding particularly well.

Ask us about the GlowUp

If sun damage or pigment is part of what you want addressed alongside laxity, there is a combination worth knowing about. The GlowUp packages microneedling — with radiofrequency, as here, or without — with the LaseMD Ultra thulium laser and PRP in a single visit.

Skin concerns rarely sit at one depth. The needles and radiofrequency work into the dermis, the laser works on surface pigment and tone, and the PRP goes into the channels both create — with one recovery period rather than two or three. It is booked and priced as a package, and if Morpheus8 on its own is the right answer for what you are treating, we will tell you that instead.

How many sessions will I need?

Three, spaced four to six weeks apart, is the standard course. Some patients notice a change after the first session, but collagen remodeling is cumulative and the protocols that show meaningful improvement in the literature use a series. Deeper acne scarring sometimes needs more.

What should I expect during and after treatment?

Numbing cream goes on first and takes 30 to 45 minutes to work properly. The treatment itself takes 45 to 60 minutes for a full face and neck.

Every facial Morpheus8 treatment here finishes with a PRP mask — platelet-rich plasma drawn from your own blood and applied to the treated skin. That is standard for us rather than an upsell, and it is included. PDGF+, a topical growth-factor preparation, is available as an optional paid add-on afterward for patients who want it.

Afterward, expect redness and mild swelling for two to three days and small pinpoint marks for three to five days. Most patients are comfortable in social settings within five to seven days, and makeup can go on after 24 to 48 hours.

How long do results last?

Visible change begins at three to six weeks as new collagen forms, with the full outcome at about three months and continued improvement for up to six months. Most patients hold their result for 12 to 18 months.

It is not permanent, and no collagen treatment is. Aging continues, and the collagen you build will gradually be lost again — which is why many patients return for a single maintenance session each year rather than repeating the full series.

What do the results look like?

When Morpheus8 isn't the right answer

Radiofrequency microneedling tightens skin; it does not remove it. If you have significant laxity — jowling, loose neck skin, a heavy lower face — repeated Morpheus8 will improve texture and give modest tightening, but it will not produce the result you are picturing. We say that at the consultation rather than after the third session. Where a facelift or neck lift is what would actually work, we refer to a board-certified plastic or facial plastic surgeon.

Why choose PhillyMedClub for Morpheus8 in Philadelphia?

You choose your provider when you book, and if you book a physician, the physician performs the treatment personally — our advanced practice nurse also performs it, and either way the person you selected is the one holding the handpiece. We treat conservatively at 1 to 3 mm across most of the face, because the fat-loss outcomes circulating online come from depth and energy mismatched to the tissue rather than from the device itself. Numbing is a compounded lidocaine, tetracaine and prilocaine preparation applied and monitored here rather than sent home with you, and every facial treatment finishes with a PRP mask made from your own blood at no extra cost. For significant jowling or genuinely loose neck skin this is the wrong treatment and we will say so. From $649 a session in Fishtown, Philadelphia.

For Him

Men tolerate Morpheus8 well, and male skin is typically thicker with higher collagen density. Most requested for the jawline, jowls and neck — with the honest caveat that this treats skin quality and early laxity, not the kind of change surgery makes.

For Her

Our most requested advanced skin treatment among female patients — lower face laxity, neck, under-eye crepiness and overall skin quality. A popular pre-wedding choice; most patients start 4–6 months before the event so collagen remodeling has time to show.

Frequently asked questions

How is Morpheus8 different from regular microneedling?

Radiofrequency, and nothing else. Both use fine needles to create a controlled injury that triggers collagen production; Morpheus8 adds heat into the dermis through insulated needles. Neither is an upgrade of the other. Plain microneedling is frequently the better choice for skin quality and acne scarring, and it costs less. We will tell you which one fits what you are actually treating rather than defaulting to the more expensive option.

Is Morpheus8 worth it?

It depends entirely on what you want it to do. For skin texture, pore size, early laxity and acne scarring, patient satisfaction in the published literature is high. For significant jowling or genuinely loose neck skin it is the wrong treatment, and satisfaction is correspondingly poor. Most of the disappointment attached to this device comes from mismatched expectations rather than from the device itself. We would rather tell you at consultation that you are outside its range than sell you a series that cannot deliver.

What is the downtime for Morpheus8?

Expect 3–5 days of visible redness and small pinpoint marks. Most patients return to work and social activities within 5–7 days, and makeup can be applied after 24–48 hours. Every Morpheus8 facial treatment finishes with a PRP mask made from your own blood, included at no extra cost.
