What is a HydraFacial?

HydraFacial is hydradermabrasion. A spiral tip exfoliates the surface, uses gentle suction to clear pores, and pushes serum into freshly cleansed skin — all in a single pass. It replaces the abrasive crystals of older microdermabrasion with a vortex of water and suction, which is why it is comfortable and why there is no downtime.

Does HydraFacial actually work?

Worth answering carefully, because this is a category where marketing has run well ahead of the evidence.

The most relevant study tested the device itself rather than hydradermabrasion in general. Twenty adults with mild-to-moderate acne at two US sites had six HydraFacial Clarifying Treatments, one every two weeks across 12 weeks, and acne severity was scored by both the investigators and the patients. Severity improved significantly on both assessments, and the treatment was well tolerated (Storgard et al., Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology, 2022).

Three things you should know about that study before you weigh it. It was open-label with no control group, so there is nothing to separate the treatment's effect from natural variation in acne over three months. It enrolled twenty people. And one of its authors works for the company that makes the device — disclosed in the paper, which is the right thing to do, and still worth knowing.

Separately, imaging work using line-field confocal optical coherence tomography found the stratum corneum — the outermost layer of dead cells — measurably thinner after hydradermabrasion, with no change to collagen in the dermis at two weeks (Skin Research and Technology, 2024).

That is the honest summary: real, measurable effects at the surface of the skin, from a small evidence base. HydraFacial resurfaces and hydrates. It does not remodel collagen. If someone tells you a facial will tighten your skin, they are describing a treatment that isn't this one — ours are Morpheus8 and microneedling.

Is HydraFacial good for congested pores and acne?

For blackheads, congestion and dull texture, yes. Extraction is the part of the treatment doing that work, and the suction is gentler and more consistent than manual extraction, which relies on pressure that can bruise and inflame the skin around a pore.

If acne is what you are treating, ask for the Clarifying protocol rather than a standard HydraFacial. It is a different sequence — a glycolic and salicylic acid peel step, extraction, then blue LED light — and it is the version that was actually studied. That also means the study cannot tell you how much of the benefit came from the suction and how much from the acids and the light.

For active inflammatory acne — painful, deep, cystic lesions — a facial is not the answer, and the study above enrolled mild-to-moderate acne rather than severe. We will say so and talk to you about medical treatment instead, which is the advantage of having this conversation in a physician's office.

How often should I have one?

Monthly is the usual cadence; every six weeks suits plenty of people. The effects are genuine but temporary, so this is maintenance rather than a course of treatment with an endpoint. That is not a criticism — a great deal of good skin is maintenance.

What should I expect?

Forty-five to sixty minutes. No numbing and no real discomfort beyond the sensation of suction. Skin looks brighter and feels smoother the same day.

No redness, no peeling, no downtime. You can put makeup on immediately and go straight back to work or out for the evening — which is why it is the treatment we most often suggest before an event, and why it pairs easily with injectables on the same visit.

When is something else the better option?

If your main concern is sun damage or pigment, a peel or a laser treatment will do more. If it is texture, acne scarring or laxity, microneedling or Morpheus8 is the right tool.

HydraFacial is the best entry point into skin health and the best maintenance treatment we offer. It is not the strongest treatment we offer. Those are two different claims, and clinics that blur them are doing you a disservice.
