What is Kybella?

Kybella is injectable deoxycholic acid, a molecule your own body uses to break down dietary fat. Injected into the fat beneath the chin, it disrupts fat cell membranes so those cells are destroyed and cleared by the body over the following weeks.

It is FDA-approved for submental fullness — the area under the chin — and the cells it destroys do not regenerate. It requires no anesthesia beyond topical numbing, no incisions and no formal recovery.

Why we usually pair it with Morpheus8

Kybella on its own solves half the problem, and for many patients the half it does not solve is the one that matters.

Fat under the chin usually sits beneath skin that has some laxity of its own. Remove the volume and leave the skin as it was, and the result can look looser rather than tighter. There is little point losing the fat if the skin above it is going to sag into the space.

Morpheus8 addresses both sides of that. At the depths used under the chin it works on the subcutaneous fat and tightens the overlying skin at the same time — which is precisely the combination the submental area needs.

The two tools are good at different things. Kybella is effective at reducing fat in quantity but harder to be precise with. Morpheus8 is more controllable and does the tightening, but works gradually. Used together, Kybella does the bulk reduction and Morpheus8 refines and tightens.

How they are sequenced — which first, how many of each, how far apart — varies genuinely from patient to patient, and it is what the consultation is for.

What Kybella does, and what it does not

Kybella removes fat. It does not tighten skin.

That distinction decides whether it is the right treatment on its own. If your under-chin fullness is fat sitting over reasonably firm skin, removing the fat improves the profile. If the skin is already lax, Kybella alone is the wrong plan.

Assessing which problem you actually have is the whole consultation, and it is why we would rather look at you than sell from a menu.

The swelling is significant — plan for it

This is the part patients are least prepared for, and underselling it does nobody any favors.

Expect a visibly swollen area under the chin for three to seven days after treatment, sometimes longer following the first session. It is a normal part of how the treatment works rather than a complication, but it is noticeable and it does not hide easily.

Do not book this within two to three weeks of a wedding, a holiday or anything photographed. Several sessions spaced six weeks apart means planning across a couple of months. If you have a date in the calendar, our wedding and event consultation plans the whole timeline backward from it.

What are the risks?

Beyond swelling, bruising and tenderness, there are three worth knowing about specifically.

Nerve injury. The marginal mandibular nerve runs close to the treatment area and controls part of your smile. Injection too close to it can cause temporary weakness and an uneven smile. This resolves, but it can take weeks to months, and avoiding it depends entirely on knowing where that nerve sits — which is the argument for a physician doing the injecting.

Difficulty swallowing. Uncommon, usually mild and temporary, but reported.

Injection site problems. Firm nodules under the skin, and rarely tissue damage or ulceration if product is placed incorrectly.

None of this is a reason to avoid the treatment. It is a reason to have it done by someone who can describe the anatomy of your neck before they inject it.

Who is a good candidate?

Someone with a moderate amount of fat under the chin, reasonably good skin quality, and realistic expectations about the number of sessions and the swelling between them.

It is a poor choice as a standalone treatment if skin laxity is your main issue — that is the case for pairing with Morpheus8 — or if the fullness is caused by a low or receding chin position rather than fat, in which case filler along the jaw may do more.

How many sessions, and is it really permanent?

Two to four sessions spaced around six weeks apart — at the lower end of that range for those starting with less fullness.

The cells destroyed are gone permanently. What that does not mean is that the area is fixed forever: the fat cells remaining can still enlarge with meaningful weight gain. Most patients treated to a result they like keep it, and we would rather explain that now than have you feel misled in three years.
