Men's Laser Hair Removal
What is men's laser hair removal?
It is the same technology and the same platform we use for every patient — the Candela GentleMax Pro — applied to the areas men most often ask about: back, chest, shoulders, neck and the beard line. Treatment is performed by licensed medical aestheticians in a physician-owned practice, on protocols set by our physicians.
Which laser do you use?
The Candela GentleMax Pro, a dual-wavelength system pairing a 755 nm alexandrite laser with a 1064 nm Nd:YAG. Two wavelengths matter here for a practical reason: coarse hair and deeper skin tones are treated more safely at 1064 nm, while finer hair on lighter skin responds better at 755 nm. A burst of cryogen cools the skin milliseconds before each pulse, which is why most men get through a full back without numbing cream. There is more detail on the platform on our laser hair removal page.
How many sessions do men need?
Generally eight to ten on the back and chest, against six to eight for comparable areas on female patients. Male body hair is coarser and denser, and there is simply more of it cycling through growth phases — a laser can only disable a follicle while its hair is actively growing, so each session catches a different fraction of them. Coarse dark hair actually responds well, because it holds more of the melanin the laser targets. Most men see a visible difference after the second or third session.
Is it permanent?
Permanent reduction rather than permanent removal — that is the FDA's own term, defined as a long-term, stable reduction in the number of hairs regrowing, measured at 6, 9 and 12 months after a completed series. Most of the treated hair stops coming back. A minority regrows finer and lighter, and follicles that were dormant during your series can activate later.
What if I have had laser hair removal before?
If you completed a series and have patches coming back — common on the shoulders and the edges of the back — book a 10-minute touch-up rather than a full session. It is a short, targeted treatment of the spots that returned, not a fresh course, and it is open to men whose original series was done somewhere else.
Can back and chest be treated in the same visit?
Yes — we frequently combine them in a single extended session, and package pricing is available for combined areas. Back and chest together is our most requested male booking.
What should I do before my appointment?
Shave the area the day before, or the morning of at the latest — this is the single thing that most affects both your comfort and your result. Shaving clears the surface hair so the laser's energy reaches the follicle rather than burning off hair at skin level, and it leaves the root intact for the laser to target. If shaving a full back yourself is not realistic, add shave and trim when you book — it appears as an option with the current price shown.
For four weeks beforehand, do not wax, pluck or epilate — these remove the root, which is the target. And avoid sunbathing, tanning beds and self-tanner for at least two weeks: a fresh tan means treating at reduced settings, or rescheduling.
What should I expect afterward?
Expect a warm snapping sensation during treatment and skin that looks pink for a few hours afterward. There is no downtime.
Do not shave the treated area for the first 48 hours while the skin is sensitive; after that, shaving between sessions is fine and is the method we recommend. Let the treated hairs shed on their own over the following one to three weeks — what looks like regrowth in that window is usually hairs working their way out. Avoid sun exposure, hot tubs, saunas and heavy sweating for 24 to 48 hours, and use sunscreen on treated areas through the series.

Why choose PhillyMedClub for men's laser hair removal in Philadelphia?
Same platform, same protocols, dosed for male hair. We treat on the Candela GentleMax Pro, performed by licensed medical aestheticians in a physician-owned practice on protocols set by our physicians. Back and chest generally need eight to ten sessions against six to eight for comparable areas on female patients, because male body hair is coarser, denser and there is simply more of it cycling through growth phases — and we would rather tell you that upfront than sell you a six-session course that leaves you short. Back and chest can be combined in one extended session. The result is permanent reduction rather than permanent removal, which is the FDA's own term. If you finished a series elsewhere and have patches returning, our ten-minute touch-ups are open to you. From $20 a session in Fishtown, Philadelphia.
Male hair is typically coarser and denser than female hair, which the Candela GentleMax Pro handles well — coarse dark hair holds more of the melanin the laser targets. Back and chest packages are our most popular male laser service.

Can I get back and chest treated in the same session?
Yes — we frequently combine back and chest in a single extended session. Package pricing is available for combined areas.
Is it uncomfortable?
Most men describe a warm snapping sensation. The Candela GentleMax Pro sprays a burst of cryogen onto the skin milliseconds before each pulse, which is why most men get through a full back without numbing cream.
