What is Laser Genesis — and what do we use?
Laser Genesis is a brand name belonging to Cutera, and their trademark. The treatment itself is a class of non-ablative laser skin revitalization: rapid, low-fluence pulses of 1064 nm Nd:YAG that gently raise the temperature of the upper dermis without breaking the surface of the skin.
We deliver that treatment on our Candela GentleMax Pro, adjusting pulse settings to work in this mode. It is the same platform we use for laser hair removal and spider vein treatment — the 1064 nm wavelength is versatile precisely because it reaches past the epidermis without being strongly absorbed by surface pigment.
We name the device because you should know what you are being treated with, and because clinics using the brand name rarely say which machine is in the room.
What does it treat?
- Diffuse facial redness and flushing
- Rosacea — the visible redness component
- Enlarged pores and rough texture
- Fine lines and general skin dullness
- Some scarring, including post-acne redness
The mechanism is gentle heat rather than injury. Heating the upper dermis targets the fine vascular network responsible for background redness and, over a series, stimulates collagen. Nothing is ablated, so there is no peeling and no visible recovery.
Is it safe for all skin tones?
Yes. The 1064 nm wavelength penetrates past the epidermis with relatively little absorption by surface melanin, which is the same property that makes it the safer choice for laser hair removal on deeper skin tones. It is appropriate across Fitzpatrick I through VI.
Melasma and stubborn pigmentation — why we often pair it with a peel
For pigmentation, and melasma in particular, we frequently recommend combining this with a VI Peel rather than relying on either alone. The rationale is sequencing: the Nd:YAG works on pigment at depth and settles the vascular component, and the peel then addresses pigment at the surface.
Some honesty about melasma, because it is the hardest thing we treat. It is a chronic, relapsing condition driven by hormones and sun exposure. No laser and no peel cures it. Both can make it worse if used too aggressively — melasma is notorious for rebounding harder after over-treatment, which is why we work conservatively and build slowly rather than chasing a fast result.
Daily sun protection and, in many cases, topical therapy are the foundation. The in-office treatments sit on top of that, not instead of it. If you want a straight answer: expect management, not cure, and be wary of anyone who frames it differently.
How many sessions will I need?
Five to six, spaced three to four weeks apart, is the usual course for chronic redness or rosacea. Many patients then keep going at a lower frequency, because redness returns if the underlying tendency is still there.
The effect is cumulative. One session before an event will leave your skin looking calmer and more even, but judging the treatment on a single visit is judging it too early.
What does it feel like, and what happens afterward?
Thirty to forty-five minutes. Most people describe a building warmth across the face, comfortable rather than painful, with no numbing needed.
Afterward you may look slightly flushed for up to an hour. There is no peeling, no marks and nothing to hide — makeup goes straight back on and you can return to work or go out the same evening.
Use sunscreen daily. That matters more than usual here: sun exposure drives the redness and pigmentation you are treating, and skipping it undoes the series you have paid for.
What it won't do
It will not tighten loose skin — that is Morpheus8. It will not resurface deep acne scarring the way microneedling does. And it will not permanently remove larger, discrete vessels; those are treated differently.
What it does well is background redness, surface quality and pore appearance, gradually and without downtime.
